New figures: Every 5th motorist views electric cars more negatively now

Both the car factories and motorists are now finding the reverse gear when it comes to electric cars. Among the latter, only one in 10 believes that electric cars will dominate the roads in 2030.

Only one in ten motorists now believe that the majority of cars will be fully electric by 2030.

This is shown by a survey that the Swedish part of Circle K has had done by Kantar Media.

However, the motorists surveyed are all in a petrol or diesel car at the moment. Which they did when asked.

In connection with similar roundabouts in 2023 and 2022 respectively, 19 and 23 percent of motorists believed that electric cars will dominate in 2030.

Instead, the latest survey indicates that 34 percent of motorists now believe that electric cars will only dominate 'sometime after 2035'. At the same time, one in five answered that 'they have become more negative towards electric cars in the past year'.

– Now our survey shows a downward trend also in relation to the attitude towards the electric cars themselves.

– And it is unexpected that so many state that they have become more negative, says Erika Albansson Söderlund, communications manager at Circle K.

However, it is neither range anxiety nor the concern about whether there is now also a charger nearby that causes drivers to turn their thumbs down.

The motorists simply reply that it is the high price of electric cars that keeps them from buying an electric car. And there can be something. At least if you ask Volkswagen.

In an internal email to his employees, Volkswagen's finance director Arno Antlitz admits that the brand's electric cars are far too expensive.

– The costs and (the goal, ed.) of mobility for all are not connected. This is especially true at our German factories, which currently build the majority of the electric cars.

In order for Volkswagen to return to a starting point with a real 'people's car' – i.e. at least one car at an affordable price – it requires that production costs be further reduced. Read more about it here .
