Fewer young people under 19 bother to drive a car, survey shows

Still fewer people under the age of 19 bother to drive their own car. In the US alone, the percentage of young drivers has decreased between 2012 and 2022.

Could you wait to get your choir card and hit the roads yourself? Probably not.

But a new generation of young people does not have that problem at all. In fact, a survey shows that fewer young people under 19 bother to get behind the wheel.

In the US alone, the proportion of drivers aged 19 or younger is just 3.6 percent. This makes them the country's smallest group of drivers. Compared to the population group that has reached the age of 80.

This shows a survey by MarketWatch Guides .

New York state has seen the biggest drop in 10 years. Between 2012 and 2022, the number of drivers aged 19 or younger has fallen by as much as 49 percent.

Here at home, the opposite suggests that more young drivers are getting behind the wheel. In any case, an analysis from Danish Industry based on DTU's Transport Habits Survey in 2021 made it clear that young people's use of public transport has decreased.

In a decade, the proportion of young people who use public transport has fallen from 51 to 43 per cent in this country. At the same time, the proportion of young people who drive in a car instead has increased from 16 to 24 percent.

However, it may become more difficult to use the car in the future. The political majorities in several of the larger Danish cities are planning to tighten their grip on motorists. Copenhagen will be allowed to introduce several prohibition zones. Read more about it here .
