Volkswagen has presented the latest generation of their iconic California motorhome, which is now built on the MQB platform used in passenger cars.
The new California stands out with sliding doors on both the left and right side, which makes it more flexible than before. For the first time, the model is also offered with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain and 4MOTION all-wheel drive. Another novelty is the possibility to control motorhome functions via a display, infotainment app in the car or a smartphone app. The new California can be ordered in the Coast and Ocean versions from the end of August 2024.
Since the introduction of the first California in 1988, the model has achieved cult status among motorhomes. Volkswagen has produced over 280,000 examples of the California, which has helped establish the brand as a leader in the segment.
The new generation builds on this legacy and offers more options than ever before. Based on the longer Multivan version, the new California occupies an intermediate position in VW's motorhome series between the Caddy California and the Grand California.

All versions of the new California are equipped with a retractable roof with front window and additional side windows with mosquito nets. The new design also includes sliding doors on both sides, which increases flexibility, both under traffic lights and on campsites. Now you can access the back seat from both sides of the coach, which also allows for covered areas on both sides if you choose to add an awning.
The new California has individual rear seats instead of one large bench, providing more flexibility for transporting bikes, surfboards and paddleboards. All versions also have a new motorhome control unit, which is located in the C-pillar on the right-hand side, from which you can control various functions of the motorhome. Alternatively, you can use an app on your smartphone or in the car's infotainment system.
The basis for the new California is Multivan's MQB platform, which provides increased length and width compared to its predecessor. This ensures more space and improved comfort. The model has three different powertrains: a four-cylinder TDI turbo diesel with 150 hp, a TSI turbo gasoline engine with 204 hp and a plug-in hybrid (eHybrid) with a system output of 245 hp.
The eHybrid drivetrain allows pure electric driving on shorter journeys, while the 4MOTION all-wheel drive offers extra traction and stability. The California eHybrid 4MOTION also has a maximum towing capacity of 2,000 kg, making it ideal for campers who need to tow trailers or boats.
Volkswagen has also updated the design with new color combinations and the option of two-tone paintwork, giving an iconic California look. To add extra comfort and flexibility, Volkswagen has introduced a new three-zone concept. This provides more opportunities to use the interior and outdoor areas more efficiently.
In addition, the new California comes with advanced driver assistance systems that offer extra safety and comfort. From emergency braking to Travel Assist, which supports partially automated traffic, there is a wide range of technologies that make traveling with the new California more comfortable.
The new California offers many improvements that make it an ideal motorhome for both daily commutes and camping adventures. With plug-in hybrid and 4MOTION four-wheel drive as well as flexible interior options, it offers many features that appeal to a wide range of users. Pre-sales will start at the end of August 2024, and the first deliveries are expected at the end of 2024.
