Tesla owners must pay DKK 14,000 for hidden software

Tesla itself has admitted that some of the range of the batteries is hidden behind a paywall. And it costs a fortune to break down.

Tesla is already keeping up with the range at this point.

In Denmark's best-selling car to date – the Tesla Model Y – there is much more range to be found. The car brand's director Elon Musk has admitted this on his own social media "X".

Tesla hides the range behind a toll wall, which Model Y owners will have to pay large sums of money to get past in the future.

An example is the Model Y standard range with rear-wheel drive. It can, says the car brand, cover 420 kilometers on a single charge. But that is not true.

However, the truth will be expensive to come close to. For an extra large supplement of between 1,400 and 1,800 euros (10,000 and 13,420 kroner, ed.), Tesla will in the future make it possible to unlock the hidden range.

How much range there is to get depends entirely on the battery pack. But the hidden part is somewhere between 64 and 94 kilometers extra.

The new announcement from Tesla can be taken as both good and bad news. The latter is very likely the case for those Model Y owners who bought cars immediately before new prices began to drop massively.

On the other hand, it is not the first time that Tesla has 'held back' with information about the capacity of the batteries. In 2016, the car brand itself said that it hid another 5 kWh in a 70 kilowatt-hour battery in the Model S. Unlocking the last of the battery then cost a staggering 3,000 euros.
