The EU arouses anger: 15-year-olds are prohibited from driving special cars

The EU has decided to ban 15-year-old Swedes from driving the country's specially equipped cars – the so-called A-tractors. And that arouses anger.

15-year-olds are prohibited from driving in Sweden.

From now on, the youngest Swedes on the roads must instead be 16 years old, because they must get behind the wheel of a so-called 'A-tractor', which is a specially designed car without rear seats.

The cars are also limited to a top speed of 30 km/h. Or rather – they were. Because with the higher age limit, the EU has decided that Sweden must allow the A-tractors to go 45 km/h.

Aftonbladet writes that.

The age ban, however, arouses significant anger in Sweden. There is also anger among the elected EU members from Sweden.

– I'm mad. It is a slap in the face to young people in the countryside. The race is not short yet, but it looks very bleak, Swedish MP Emma Wiesner (C) said after the vote in January.

The EU system has reportedly long been dissatisfied with Sweden allowing young people to drive in the way that is the case today. With the new rules, however, the government in Brussels is willing to let the A-tractor scheme continue.

Conversely, the new rules do not come into force immediately. Thus, the Swedish media do not expect the government to start negotiating with the EU until sometime this autumn. In that way, the new rules will not come into effect in 2024. And perhaps not in 2025 either.

The fact that the negotiations have not ended in a law yet also means that there is an opportunity to stop them during the 'final negotiations' in the EU's Council of Ministers.

Here at home, it is still not allowed to drive a car on your own, unless you are 18 years old. However, since 2017, 17-year-olds have been able to drive a car if a more experienced driver sits next to them.
