Sweden will give drivers 10,000 kroner to buy an electric car

Motorists in Sweden can get 10,000 kroner in hand. But then the money must also be used to buy an electric car after scrapping a car that is at least 15 years old.

Sweden's government wants to start a restructuring of the Swedes' private vehicle fleet.

Specifically, the government proposes to give all motorists who scrap a car at least 15 years old (regardless of type, ed.) 10,000 Swedish kroner, equivalent to just under 6,500 Danish kroner, towards the purchase of an electric car.

On the other hand, it does not matter whether the electric car is new, used or leased. This is written by the newspaper Näringslivet .

However, the Swedish government does not expect that the new grant, if it comes to fruition, will make any difference whatsoever. So not on the environmental front.

The decrease in CO2 emissions is, the government says, nothing more than minimal. The Swedes expect to be able to save 200,000 tonnes of CO2 compared to if the old cars continue on the roads for two more years.

Conversely, the reduced fuel tax, which the Swedes will also benefit from next year, increases CO2 emissions by approximately 350,000 tonnes.

If the proposal comes to fruition, the Swedish treasury will also only open up to private drivers and only for a limited period, which is expected to begin on 15 August this year.

Sweden's government says that it has earmarked a quarter of a billion Swedish kroner for the scheme, and that it is enough for 25,000 scrappings a year. According to the Swedish Transport Agency, 800 Swedes scrapped their fossil-fuel car last year in exchange for buying or leasing an electric car.
