55 percent of drivers have the same bad habit

The Danes are – perhaps not so surprisingly – bad at keeping their eyes on the road. Behind the wheel, at least everything happens other than traffic jams.

What do Danes do when they drive a car?

This is what the Swedish Safety Council has asked motorists about. And it is – perhaps not so surprisingly – terrifying reading.

Because the vast majority do everything else behind the wheel. In fact, as many as 55 percent admit that they either eat or drink while driving.

And even though it may not be outright illegal, you still have to be able to keep your full concentration on driving. Another 13 percent say they talk on a hand-held cell phone, while 5 percent say they manage a phone or video mode behind the wheel.

This is what the Council for Safe Traffic writes in a press release .

The police across the country are also on board with the idea that the Danes could well use a reminder to keep their eyes on the road.

That is why law enforcement is involved in a new inattention campaign together with 60 of the country's municipalities and the Council for Safe Traffic in the period from 6 to 17 May.

– Inattention is all too often to blame for major and serious accidents that cost lives or injure many people.

– That is why we carry out targeted checks with a focus on inattention to remind drivers to slow down when they do. In this way, traffic can become safer and safer for all of us, says Sten Rosenlund Sorensen, deputy police inspector at Funen Police.
