BMW drops iconic name for petrol cars

After decades of calling the petrol models something with an 'i', BMW is now putting the model name in the grave. The brand confirms it.

No more 330i, 435i, 540i.. well, just 'i' in general. At least on BMW's petrol models.

This is confirmed by BMW's Bernd Köber, who is responsible for the brand's branding, to the media BMW Blog .

The German car brand originally used the 'i' designation so that customers could distinguish between the petrol-injected and carbureted cars.

But the carburetor cars have long since disappeared from the program, and since then BMW has used the 'i' logo on its electric cars. Including i3 and i8. Both models which are also not available today.

Bernd Köber did not say when BMW will build the last 'i' petrol models. But it's strange that you won't be able to get a 330i any time soon.

Conversely, BMW has not said anything about the 'd' for diesel. So it suggests that the Germans have no change in mind here. Boosted follows suit.

Much apropos of diesel, BMW faces something of a headache. The German authorities believe that the brand from Munich has cheated and manipulated tens of thousands of diesel cars. Read more about it here .
