Tesla recalls one car for stupid factory error

A single copy of the Tesla Model 3 had to go to the workshop because it was built without a release in the airbag.

Tesla's cars are not flawless.

Not even when they roll out of the factory. One only has to browse Boosted's archive of recall articles to find out.

Most of the times, the American electric car manufacturer has been able to fix their own mistakes with a software update. But not this time.

Because a single Tesla Model 3 rolled out of a factory in the United States in the wrong way. It reveals a lookup in the US Highway Traffic Safety Administration's recall database.

A Model 3 – yes, one – was actually built without releases in the airbag. This means that the airbag is there. There is just nothing to make it go off and protect the car's occupants in the event of an accident.

Additional data shows that on March 15, a subcontractor alerted Tesla that a side airbag had been assembled without the deployer.

After this, 3 days were spent reviewing video surveillance from the assembly line to find out which module was not assembled properly.

That process revealed that 7 airbag modules were sent to Tesla without the all-important trigger. 6 of the cars were still with Tesla, but one car had therefore been sent out on the roads.

According to Carscoop, Tesla managed to get hold of the car's owner, recall the car and replace the faulty airbag module before the authorities alerted the public to the error.
