Danish region bans new petrol and diesel cars in 2025

Region Southern Denmark has decided that transport must significantly reduce the region's CO2 emissions. Next year, the region prohibits itself from buying fossil fuel cars.

There must be an end to buying new petrol and diesel cars. At least in Region South Denmark.

The region will begin to stop the purchase of new fossil-fuel cars as early as next year. The region states this in a press release .

According to a regional council decision, more than 50 percent of the Region of Southern Denmark will be fossil-free by 2030.

This means, among other things, that all of the region's own passenger cars must only run on electricity. Likewise, 60 percent of the cars that drive patients are prohibited, i.e. ambulances, to run on something other than electricity.

– The climate challenges must be met with concrete actions. It is ambitious in relation to the fact that, on a national level, electric cars are expected to make up approx. 21 percent of Danes' cars in 2030.

– But we think it is realistic with the market for fossil-free passenger cars that already exists now, says Karsten Uno Petersen (S), chairman of the Committee for Construction, Procurement and Green Transformation.

Region Southern Denmark is not the only public body in a hurry to get away from diesel and petrol cars. In Sweden, it has been decided to prohibit the police from driving anything other than electric cars. Read more about it here .

And in Norway they want to go even further. From 1 January 2025, the Norwegians must ban the purchase of anything other than electric cars, at least when it comes to brand new cars.
