New EU rule will raise the speed limit – but only in Sweden

Right now it is the case that the special Swedish cars called 'A-tractors' are only allowed to go 30 km/h. However, the EU will change that to 45 km/h.

The EU Commission has presented a proposal for a new choir card directive. Something the union politicians have otherwise not tinkered with since 2006.

And while a number of stupid proposals have already been thrown out of the negotiations again, one proposal in particular, which is still in the negotiations, will only apply to Sweden.

The Swedes can drive around in the so-called A-tractors. Cars that have been converted and limited to only being able to go 30 km/h.

However, the EU will have raised it to 45 km/h. In other words, the same speed as a so-called 'large moped' must travel at home.

This is what the European Commission writes on its website .

The proposal must now be negotiated with the EU member states. But it remains unclear when a final decision on changes to the choir card rules will come into effect. Especially because there are elections for the European Parliament on 9 June this year.

But there is still a time horizon that EU politicians expect to stay within. If anything comes to pass with new rules in the area of correcards, motorists can expect the rules to come into force in 2026 or 2027.

The aim of the new rules is that no one may drive on European roads by 2050 at the latest. However, the proposal for the new driving license rules may also mean that a strict Danish penalty must apply in all 27 of the EU's member states. Read more about it here .
