Jaguar to merge with unknown Chinese brand

The JRL group, which consists of Jaguar and Land Rover, will only sell electric cars in 2030. And here it might be an idea to become Chinese.

The Jaguar Land Rover group will only build electric cars. In fact, Jaguar's last car with a pure combustion engine is already short of the assembly line.

Now the British-Indian brand is considering whether to team up even more with the Chery car brand, which is owned and controlled by China's communist dictatorship.

In any case, several Chinese media – including DKK 36 – write that Jaguar is considering using platforms for electric cars that Chery already has on the shelves.

By using technology that the Chinese already have, Jaguar will be able to speed up the transition to a purely electric model range, it says.

Specifically, Jaguar is supposed to base future electric cars on technology that Chery's sub-brand Exeed already uses. This will mean that Jaguar will already be able to lift the lid on a new electric car in the second half of 2024.

A spokesman for Chery has denied that 'any agreement has been signed with Jaguar'. But the brand's chairman Yin Tongyue has confirmed that two European car brands have approached with an inquiry on the platforms.

However, Yin Tongyue will not name the 'European brands'. But it should be good enough – it's Jaguar/Land Rover.

Especially since the two brands already work closely together in a joint venture in China and have done so since 2012. That deal means models such as the Range Rover Evoque, Land Rover Discovery Sport and Jaguar XFL are built locally in China.

Things aren't exactly going well for Jaguar at home. In fact, not a single new Jaguar has appeared on Danish plates during the first three months of 2024. However, this is only two less than the same period last year.
