Aarhus drops ban on all cars – "too violent"

In Aarhus, the municipality cannot live with the fact that cars are prohibited in parts of the city. It is too difficult, says the councillor.

– We have to recognize that this is not a situation we can live with.

That's what Councilor for Technology and the Environment in Aarhus Municipality, Nicolaj Bang (K), said when the municipality dropped a ban on cars last week.

This is written by TV2 Østjylland .

Specifically, parts of Vesterbro Torv have been prohibited to cars, and traffic is one-way. But these are measures 'that are too difficult', it now reads.

In addition, there are complaints about the municipality's decision. And even though more turning lanes and bi-directional traffic must now be reopened, the politicians in Aarhus are still trying to chase motorists out of the city.

The goal of a new mobility plan is for motorists to be chased out of their cars and onto bicycles. If they don't want to, they have to take the bus or walk on their own two feet.

In this way, the municipality will reduce the number of trips by car by as much as 66 percent. For those who cannot do without the car, the wallet must be found.

As the first city in all of Denmark, Aarhus will introduce a toll on municipal roads. The measure is one of several in the so-called mobility plan.

However, the politicians in Aarhus are not the only ones who are busy cursing the car traffic far away. In Copenhagen, they will be allowed to introduce several zero-emission zones.

Right now it is the case that all Danish cities must introduce one zero-emission zone. However, there are also cities that have chosen to ignore this kind of thing, for example in Odense. Read more about it here .
