Recalling 341,000 cars with the same flammable fault

Mercedes thought the brand could "make do" with 116,000 cars. But now it turns out that there is a loose connection in another 225,000 cars. So maybe.

Back at the end of March, Mercedes in the US had to recall 116,000 GLS and GLE models because a cable under the front passenger seat can be shaken loose.

There is enough electricity in the cable to potentially cause a fire if the accident were to happen.

Now, however, the error turns out to be somewhat more extensive. In total, the brand estimates that 341,000 cars may be affected by the error.

This is written by the German news agency DPA .

According to the German response to the traffic authority, KBA, the fault may be on GLE and GLS models built between 2017 and 2023. And it may eventually develop into one or more fires.

In Germany alone, the authorities estimate that 11,000 cars may be affected by the error. Both the German and American authorities believe that Mercedes did not fasten the problematic cables well enough when the cars were on the assembly line.

Mercedes also says it is good enough. The high voltage cable can slip out of place.

So far, 31 American Mercedes owners have complained about the problem between August 2022 and November of last year. However, the repair is relatively simple, it says.

Mercedes' technicians must now examine all of the possibly problematic cables in the 116,000 cars. And if necessary, technicians will tighten the cable again, because the owners will be allowed to drive on.
