Spanish holidaymaker regrets ban on diesel cars

In Mallorca, plans were made to ban the registration of new diesel cars as early as 2025. The party in power has overturned the decision.

The government of the Balearic Islands, whose capital is Majorca, is on the verge of withdrawing a ban on the registration of new diesel cars.

The ban was adopted by the former left-wing government in 2019. But the Partido Popular de las Islas Baleares, which has been in power since 2023, has therefore chosen to overturn the decision.

This is written by the German-language Spanish newspaper Mallorca Zeitung .

The media writes that the new government has not set a new date for a possible ban on diesel cars.

Thus, it is only in the Spanish central government's climate act that it states that by 2040 there must be an end to new diesel cars on Spanish roads.

It is a full 5 years after the EU – of which Spain is a part – wants to ban the internal combustion engine completely. But even that ban seems to be wavering at the moment.

In any case, several critical voices have advocated that the EU should drop the ban on the internal combustion engine altogether.

– We need to lift the complete ban on cars with internal combustion engines, which the EU has decided, says the managing director of German Mahle, Arnd Franz, in an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

However, there are also those who hold that the EU's planned ban is a good idea. For example, Volvo is in such a hurry to get away from the combustion engine that the car brand has just built the last diesel car ever. Read more about it here .

In Canada too, all new cars with internal combustion engines have been given the death certificate. Here, a ban comes into effect in 2035. In line with that from the EU.

However, one country does not think it can wait that long. Therefore, the internal combustion engine in new cars has already been banned from this year. However, it has nothing to do with the environment. Read more about it here .
