Dodge Viper owner loses lawsuit over special license plate

A German court has ruled in favor of a motor office in Bavaria that an 'American number plate' for a Dodge Viper can be rejected.

A Dodge Viper owner in Germany has been refused the number plates he had otherwise applied for on his car.

He wanted to equip the car with number plates, which in Denmark are also known as 'American plates'.

Here at home, you can easily order a US number plate, which consists of two lines of digits. But you don't have exactly the same rules in Germany.

That's what Auto motor und Sport writes.

Here, motorists apparently have to state a reason why their particular car must drive around with a square number plate. This is typically the case for the rear number plate.

And here the German Dodge owner's reasoning was found to be too thin. First before the motor office in Bavaria and then in connection with the trial, the man explained that he wanted to buy the number plate for 'aesthetic reasons'.

But that justification was therefore not accepted. Precisely, the court states in its decision, among other things, that 'the car is without the classic characteristics that otherwise justify the use of that type of number plate'.

In the judgement, the court emphasized that the Viper already had and has room for a number plate of European dimensions.

Even though precisely "US" license plates have been legal in Germany for several decades. Here at home, the number plate type only became legal in 2012. And even then, an error in some IT systems meant that the launch of the number plate had to be postponed.

Unfortunately, there are plenty of strange and often rigid rules. Also in the world of cars. For example, certain Danish drivers will be hit by a completely new tax as early as 1 January 2025.

And that's not all. Because towards 2030, the price of fuel will rise sharply due to taxes. In 2030, it is estimated that new EU rules alone will make a liter of petrol more than one kroner more expensive. Read more about both cases here .

PS : The video below has nothing to do with the case. We just think a Dodge Viper sounds too good to let anyone miss a launch. You're welcome!
