New tax hits drivers on 1 January – minister is proud

On 1 January 2025, the government will hit most trucks in Denmark with a new kilometer tax. The responsible minister refuses to do anything.

From the first of January, 1 kroner and 30 øre must be paid for every kilometer a Danish-registered truck travels in this country. However, the tax varies according to the individual truck's CO2 emissions.

From the government's side, the argument is that imposing the tax on hauliers will create a greener transport sector. Conversely, the transport industry and related organizations have criticized the new tax in sharp terms.

The industry believes that there is only one place to send the bill to, namely to consumers in the form of more expensive goods.

But the responsible minister, Tax Minister Jeppe Bruus (S), refuses to look at the tax again. On the contrary, according to the Danish media MobilityWatch, he is 'proud' of the criticized tax.

The minister also denies that the industry will suffer from the fact that it will now be more expensive to run this kind of business at home.

However, the mileage tax on lorries is not the only new tax Danes have to deal with in the new year.

The government will also make fuel significantly more expensive. This is happening even though a 15-year-old agreement actually did exactly the same thing on January 1, 2024.

And that's not all. Because until 2030, only more taxes will be imposed on fuel. A new EU rule means, for example, that motorists will have to pay over one kroner more per liter in the next decade.

On top of that crown must be added the taxes that the current government itself intends to impose on motorists. Read more about it here .
