That's how expensive it is to change the battery in an electric car

The battery is the absolute most expensive part of an electric car. And it can be expensive to change everything at once. But in several cases it is not necessary at all, according to German media.

There have been several examples of car owners who have had to pay hideously large sums because the battery in their electric cars has died for one reason or another.

For example, a Tesla owner received a bill of DKK 142,000 for a new battery. And back in 2022, another car owner was shocked that a new battery cost more than the car itself. Read more about it here.

But how expensive is it really if there is a problem with the battery in an electric car? Not necessarily ruinously expensive.

That's what Auto Motor und Sport writes.

The German media have asked a number of car manufacturers what they take for a brand new battery for a used electric car. Unfortunately, the answer is not clear cut. Like the price is very different.

There is also the problem that Auto Motor und Sport was only informed of the price of the individual modules from which the batteries are built.

So not what one whole battery costs. But only what the repair of it would lob up. At Volkswagen, it will cost 1,450 euros, equivalent to just under 11,000 kroner, to change a single module in a 58 kWh battery for an ID.4.

At BMW, the price is 1,794 euros for a single module for an i3. Renault said the price of a module for a Zoe fluctuates between 1,500 and 5,000 euros plus the labor wage.

Tesla, Mercedes and Opel would not disclose specific prices for these modules. Conversely, the warranty on the battery in an electric car often extends far beyond the warranty on the other parts of the car.

For example, Mercedes, which will not disclose the price of a battery module, covers the entire battery for a period of 10 years or the first 250,000 kilometers.

At Toyota, they want to stretch even further. Namely 10 years or the first million kilometres, whichever comes first.

But that does not change the fact that whole and brand new batteries are still expensive acquisitions, should the accident happen. Especially after the warranty expires.

The largest battery for a Nio, for example, costs a whopping DKK 168,000 according to the brand's Danish website.

In other words, there is not much Danish over Nine any more. Last week it emerged that the brand is packing up, firing people in Denmark and moving to Sweden. Read more about it here .

At Mercedes, you want DKK 200,000 for a new battery for an EQA. According to the Danish charging station installer Power Fuel, people in electric cars should expect that new batteries for electric cars cost at least between DKK 50,000 and 150,000.

But, as we have just described, it can easily become more expensive. Much more expensive. Especially if/when it is necessary to change the entire battery pack at once and not just repair the individual modules.
