Woman cheated on petrol for DKK 190,000

In an incredibly simple way, 45-year-old Dawn Thompson managed to cheat herself out of petrol for a total of DKK 190,000 at a petrol station in the US state of Nebraska.

The 45-year-old woman, Dawn Thompson, probably thought she had found the world's coolest scam.

In the first instance, the American woman also managed to pick up petrol to the value of almost 28,000 dollars, corresponding to 190,000 Danish kroner, without paying for it.

According to the police, the woman took advantage of a mistake at the petrol stations. An error which had arisen after a software update of the control systems in the petrol stations themselves.

The 45-year-old Dawn Thompson had somehow calculated that she could use a so-called 'reward card', which the gas station gave out to its most loyal customers, again and again. And again.

All she had to do was swipe the card over the card reader itself twice in quick succession. That brought out the gas gauge's demo setting.

And that way, Dawn Thompson could refuel without paying. Something she, according to the gas station staff and later the police, used for half a year before the fraud was discovered.

But the 45-year-old also told at least one other woman about the scam. Together, the two of them ransacked the petrol station for the many liters of petrol.

The security gap in the gas station's systems was closed in June last year. However, it was not until March 6 this year that Thompson was arrested and charged in the case.

But the weirdness of the story doesn't stop there. Because the 45-year-old woman got the card for being a 'good' customer.

She allegedly bought it from a man as part of payment for some old debt. However, the man's side of the story is impossible to get. He died back in January.
