European car factory loses 52 million kroner a day

Ford's only remaining production in Germany has been idle since last week, and it hurts the economy.

Last week, a layoff paralyzed Ford's factory in the German city of Saarlouis. This is due to a strike among sub-suppliers, on which the brand's production depends.

The IG Metall union estimated last week that it would take a few hours to restart production. And since that happened, no cars have been built at the factory.

Something that affects Ford's economy. The factory, which the car brand is already looking almost in vain for a buyer for, is currently losing millions of kroner by being idle.

Benjamin Gruschka, the head of the cooperation committee at the factory, thinks so. In fact, he estimates that Ford loses up to 1 million euros every single day, which corresponds to 7 million kroner, by being idle.

Benjamin Gruschka bases the estimated loss on lost orders and that motorists now have to wait even longer for their new cars.

The loss in Saarlouis is just the latest in a long line of bad news for Ford. Last year, a Chinese brand jumped out of a purchase agreement for that very factory at the last minute. And in the same year it emerged that Ford wanted to fire 1 out of 9 factory employees in Europe.

At the factory in Saarlouis, however, the 3,750 employees are guaranteed work until November next year. This even though the factory should actually have been closed half a year ago. Read more about it here .
