Survey: Electric cars are significantly more expensive to insure than fossil-fuel cars

For the first time ever, sales of electric cars now exceed sales of petrol and diesel cars. But this progress has an economic downside, as electric cars entail higher costs for both repair and insurance.

According to F&P, repairs to electric cars are up to 30 percent more expensive compared to fossil cars. On average, it costs DKK 15,300 to repair an electric car, while a newer petrol car costs DKK 11,700.

It is also noteworthy that Tesla models are among the electric cars with the most expensive repairs. A Tesla Model 3 has an average repair bill of almost DKK 14,800, while a Tesla Model Y costs over DKK 16,400.

A survey by Samlino shows that electric cars have 38% more damage compared to fossil cars. According to Mads Bukholt from Samlino, this is primarily due to the electric cars’ tendency to ‘hovsa damage’, which occurs due to sudden accelerations from their powerful engines.

Survey: Electric cars are significantly more expensive to insure than fossil-fuel cars

And precisely for that reason, it is significantly more expensive to insure an electric car. The survey also revealed that it costs, on average, DKK 1,716 more to insure an electric car than a fossil-fuel car. The more powerful and faster a car is, the higher the insurance premium will be – perhaps not surprisingly.

Furthermore, there are significant variations in insurance prices between electric cars and fossil cars across the country’s regions. It is therefore important to choose the right car insurance , which is not too expensive – but which at the same time still covers sensibly.
