Lawsuit gets a lot of light: Tesla owners feel cheated by a dirty trick

A judge has ruled that Tesla can be sued for removing range with software in the brand's cars.

A judge in the US state of California has ruled that Tesla can be sued based on allegations of software fraud.

The decision comes after a number of Tesla owners threatened to take Tesla to court last May because the range in their cars suddenly became significantly smaller.

The owners, who have now received the court's word that the lawsuit can continue, believe that up to 20 percent of the cars' range disappeared.

According to the court documents, Tesla owners believe that the brand, with a series of automatic software updates, has reduced the range of the cars by up to 20 percent.

And that without the owners being informed about it. Just as they have not been able to prevent the rollout of the update to their particular cars.

If the legal system finds that there is actually some substance to the angry car owners' claims, Tesla will hardly be able to ignore it.

The lawsuit takes up 16 pages. On those pages, the angry Tesla owners also write that several of them have subsequently paid 'third parties' several hundred dollars to have Tesla's restriction rolled back or to restore the original capacity of the batteries.

Some of the Tesla owners claim in the lawsuit that Tesla's update rendered the batteries in their cars useless. And that they therefore had to get other batteries. Something that has cost up to 15,000 dollars, equivalent to 103,000 Danish kroner.

The fact that the lawsuit has now been given the green light is not the same as the fact that the angry motorists have won over Tesla. At least not yet.

The case may end in a settlement, because it even reaches a courtroom. Of course, there is also the possibility that there is no support in the claims. And it hardly shakes Tesla.
