New figures – Danes still prefer to drive in petrol cars

New figures on registered cars in Europe and thus Denmark show that sales of electric cars grew only slightly in January. The petrol car is still most popular.

It went forward for car sales in January, and it is still the petrol cars that pull the majority of the load.

New electric cars, on the other hand, made up 10.9 percent of new car sales. A modest improvement compared to the same month last year, when electric cars accounted for 9.5 percent of sales.

In total, more than 851,000 new passenger cars were given number plates within the borders of the EU, according to a calculation made by De Danske Bilimportorer .

Gasoline cars continue to occupy most of the market. As much as 35.2 percent according to the latest settlement. If the sale of plug-in hybrids is included, 63 percent of all new cars are powered by petrol.

The diesel cars are not doing so well. In fact, sales have declined in the past year. In January 2023, Europeans bought diesel cars in 15.8 percent of all new car deals. That figure is now down to 13.8 percent.

At De Danske Bilimportorer, one would like to push even more electric cars onto the roads. But there are many indications that this can only be done with an artificially low registration fee.

– The figures from January clearly show that Denmark's electrical lead over the EU average has been significantly reduced, which underlines how crucial it is that the charges are kept in check, says the organisation's director Mads Rorvig.

The other day, Mads Rorvig was caught in a row about electric cars, for which he refuses to apologise. Read more about the case here .
