France stops supporting electric cars because it is popular

The government in France has pumped money into a program that makes it possible for the country's motorists to lease electric cars very cheaply. But now the idea, which is too popular, is scrapped.

France will now stop offering the country's motorists an extremely cheap way of driving. Until now, the French have been able to lease electric cars for just 100 euros a month. This corresponds to DKK 750 per month.

All because the government has posted money in the project. But that stops now. However, the reason is not a lack of interest from motorists.

On the contrary, the program has proven to be so popular that the administration behind the scheme has been inundated with applications for the cheap leasing.

Reuters writes that.

France's government suspended the scheme last December. It should make electric cars built in France and the rest of Europe more accessible to more drivers.

It was mainly low-income families that the scheme had to cater for. But the French government must have underestimated the interest in state-supported leasing.

Because simply increasing the number of available leasing agreements from 25,000 to 50,000 was not enough to cover the demand.

By the end of January, 90,000 French people had applied to get hold of one of the very cheap leasing contracts.

Which has caused the government to put the program on hold. Officially, it is said that this is happening so that the car brands have time to build the electric cars in demand.

At home, it is not cheap leasing that the government offers. Still, a majority in Christiansborg keep their hand under the electric car. Read more about it here .
