It's over – BMW scraps famous equipment

We have to go all the way back to 1988 to find a BMW 5-Series that has not been able to open the rear window separately from the tailgate. But now it's over.

These days, BMW presents the latest 5 Series station wagon – or "touring" as they say – to the public.

But BMW customers who are used to the 5-Series will soon discover that one feature in particular is missing. The rear window can no longer be opened separately from the other tailgate.

That's how it's been ever since the first 5-Series Touring hit the market with the E34 Touring in 1992.

That's what Motor1 writes.

According to Alexander Schmuck, Product & Technology Communications Manager at BMW North America, the brand has said goodbye to the badge for several reasons.

First and foremost, however, BMW believes that there was no room for the mechanism behind the separate opening of the rear window in the new 5-Series.

To Motor1, Alexander Schmuck says directly that it would have swallowed 'too much' interior space to equip the 5 series with the mechanism.

BMW also believes that the possibility of opening the rear window in this way in advance is not really something that customers make use of.

For the same reason – i.e. to save money – BMW was already in 2019 on the verge of dropping the idea when it launched a new 3-Series. In fact, BMW's engineers had to convince management that it was a good idea to keep the separate rear window.

However, BMW is far from the only one who will go to great lengths to save a few hands in production. Ford is also currently considering dropping certain types of equipment altogether.Read more about it here .
