Car hatred is growing – parking will cost NOK 134 per hour

Just as not all Parisians took part in the referendum, not all car owners will have to pay the bills either.

As in several Danish cities, the city government in Paris apparently has so much against cars that they have sent a punishment to the owners to a referendum.

That referendum was held over the weekend. And here a majority voted to raise the parking rate in the center of Paris to 18 euros, equivalent to 134 kroner per hour.

Outside the city centre, Parisians think it should cost 13 euros, equivalent to 97 kroner, for each hour of parking.

That is what France24 writes.

At least the majority of the part of Parisians who took part in the vote. Because just 5.7 percent of the residents of Paris chose to vote. This corresponds to 78,000 people.

However, this does not change the fact that 54 percent of Parisians who voted voted to triple the price of parking. But not for all the cars.

The tripling of parking rates in the city will only affect people in 'heavier' cars. In other words, all cars weighing 1,600 kilos or more.

The proposal, which has been put to a referendum, exempts the Parisians themselves. Just like disabled cars are exempt. The same goes for taxis, cars owned by healthcare workers and craftsmen.

But everyone else? Yes, they have to pay. Even if very few Parisians even bothered to vote. The rule is already expected to come into force in September this year.

However, Paris' mayor Anne Hidalgo interprets the vote as 'a clear answer for the Parisians'. A clear no thanks to the cars. An example the mayor believes several other cities will adopt.

Parking fees aren't the only thing Parisians don't really want to deal with. When the city government wanted to ban electric scooters last year, just 103,000 Parisians voted. This meant that lobe wheels have been banned since September last year.
