BYD U7: Electric car with 1,300 hp and kung fu on the roof

The 1,300 horsepower electric luxury sedan must impress for its world premiere – that's why BYD has put a Chinese kung fu master on the roof…

A few days before the official launch, BYD is demonstrating its new electric top model Yangwang U7 with an unconventional stunt.

In a video shared on Chinese social media, the 1,300 horsepower electric car drives over bumpy roads with a Wing Chun kung fu master standing on the roof – balancing on one leg.

The stunt takes place at Zhangjiakou Ningyuan Airport in Hebei Province and aims to showcase the car's advanced suspension system, Disus-Z.

The system adapts to road irregularities in real time and is intended to ensure extreme stability, even under unusual conditions.

The Yangwang U7 is the third vehicle under BYD's luxury brand Yangwang. It follows the U8 SUV, known for floating on water, and the U9 supercar that can " dance " on the spot. The U7 is a large four-door sedan with seating for five, measuring nearly 5.3 meters in length.

The four-wheel drive electric car is equipped with four electric motors – one for each wheel – which together deliver 956 kW (equivalent to 1,282 hp) and a torque of 1,584 Nm.

The battery has a capacity of 135.5 kWh and, according to the Chinese CLTC standard, provides a range of up to 720 kilometers. Thanks to the 800-volt architecture, the car can be charged with up to 500 kW, which corresponds to 300 kilometers in just 10 minutes of charging.

The exact price will only be revealed at the launch in Shenzhen, but BYD describes the model as a “million-yuan car,” which is equivalent to about $138,000. However, the introductory price is expected to be somewhat lower. A plug-in hybrid version is also in development.

The special Disus-Z system, which the U7 is the first model to feature, builds on BYD's Disus technology, which was first presented in 2023.

The Disus series consists of several types of suspension systems – from air and hydraulic to dynamic damping control. The Disus-Z is the latest and most advanced version and allows each wheel to be controlled independently for maximum comfort and control.

With the stunt video and technical presentation, BYD is attempting to cement its position at the absolute top of the electric car market.

In particular, the Yangwang series aims to compete with established luxury brands such as Mercedes-Benz and Tesla – not just on performance, but also on innovation and technology.
