Canada refuses to pay 207 million kroner to Tesla

In several places in Canada, Tesla has not only been denied access to government support. The country's government is now refusing to pay out 300 million kroner in support it has already received.

Canada is turning up the heat on Tesla, which now cannot get the 207 million Danish kroner that sales of more than 8,600 cars should otherwise trigger.

This is reported by the Toronto Star .

Money is being withheld by the government because Tesla is suspected of cheating on the extremely high sales shortly before Canada stopped supporting electric cars.

It seems strange – both on paper and in reality – that Tesla has sold 8,665 cars in just three days from four locations in Canada. That's the equivalent of 2 cars per minute over the three days in a row.

On Tuesday this week, Canada's Transport Minister Chrystia Freeland made it clear that Tesla can forget about seeing anything for that money. At least for now.

– As soon as I became Transport Secretary, I asked my department to stop all payments to Tesla in order to investigate each case. It must be clarified whether all sales are valid.

But Chrystia Freeland hasn't just stopped the gigantic payout to Tesla. She's also stopped all future payments of subsidies aimed at electric cars. But only in Tesla's case.

– I have asked the department to change the conditions for support for electric cars so that they do not apply to Tesla as long as the United States imposes illegal tariffs on Canadian goods, says the Minister of Transport.

Tesla has not only been denied access to government subsidies in Canada, the country's largest auto show has also asked the brand to withdraw. It has reportedly been voluntary.
