Court rules: Tesla paints cars too poorly

A Norwegian court has ruled that a new Tesla worth 700,000 kroner must be completely repainted because the factory did not do the job well enough in the first place.

A Norwegian court has ruled that Tesla paints its cars so poorly that a complete repaint is necessary.

And although the decision only applies to a single case, it comes after a year in which several car owners have complained about shortcomings in Tesla's way of painting cars.

The case, which was heard in Trondelag City Court, concerned a Tesla worth almost 700,000 kroner.

This is what Motor.no writes.

– The paint on all painted surfaces has poorer durability than one would expect. There is a very large amount of damage. The paint is missing in several places, the district court says.

On this basis, the court has concluded that Tesla must completely repaint the car.

– All body parts must be repainted, the court writes in the decision.

But Tesla will not repaint the car itself. Instead, the brand will pay the car owner a whopping 112,000 kroner to have it done elsewhere.

Tesla, however, does not give much of a reason for the decision. Instead, the car brand believes that the paint damage occurred after delivery because 'the owner treated the car incorrectly'. Just as the owner must have been 'reckless or negligent'.

However, the district court does not believe that Tesla can prove anything. Instead, the judge has concluded that it is due to 'inherent errors'.

So Tesla painted the car poorly at the factory.

The court also noted that the paint damage is "much greater than what is expected on a new car in that price range" and that the durability of the paint was "far worse than what the customer could expect based on the age, price and mileage of the Tesla".

An independent car damage center has estimated that it will cost 112,000 kroner to completely repaint the car. And that is the guideline, the verdict is upwards.

Tesla, on the other hand, believes that the whole thing can be fixed for 'just' 33,000 kroner. In addition to the compensation for the repaint, Tesla in Norway must pay interest, legal costs and further compensation to the car owner.

This is not the first time Tesla has refused to comply with a decision that is in the customers' favor. The brand is not particularly responsive here either.

This has meant, among other things, that Tesla is the only car brand to have ended up on a critical list. Read much more about it here .
