Surprising discovery among Danish motorists

The Hillerod motorway is to be widened from three to four lanes in each direction. Even before starting the work, however, the Road Directorate has made a surprising discovery.

It is quite a few months ago that the Road Directorate used the drivers on the Hillerod Motorway as guinea pigs. However, it is only now that you are ready to talk about it.

Or at least what you have come up with. And that, the Road Directorate thinks, is quite surprising.

The authority itself states this in a press release .

In connection with the road works, the extension of the Hillerod motorway has been made into a so-called 2+1 road between Allerod and Hillerod.

Here there are alternately two tracks and one track in each direction. And that has actually made drivers drive better. In any case, the traffic flowed better during rush hour during the 14 days that the trial lasted.

Motorists were simply prevented from using both lanes. And in the one passable track, there was no possibility of overtaking. On the other hand, there was no interlacing either.

A maneuver that often causes problems during rush hour. However, the benefits of the trial did not skyrocket, admits project manager at the Road Directorate, Inge Birkegaard Damsgaard.

– We can see that we get a more flexible flow of traffic when drivers have only one lane to navigate during rush hour.

– There are fewer traffic breakdowns, and the traffic becomes smoother and more predictable for road users, which results in a better traffic flow.

– On the other hand, there are no big gains to be made outside of rush hour, when it is not possible to overtake the slower-moving choral trains, it says.
