Electric cars are fast just to be safe, says car boss

When electric cars accelerate quickly, it's more about safety than anything else. At least if you ask Stellantis' top boss Carlos Tavares.

He is ready to change his mind about electric cars if public opinion turns against the type of car. But Stellantis' top boss, Carlos Tavares, now also has a defense ready when it comes to electric cars.

At least the fastest of them. It came to light when Stellantis, the world's fourth largest car group, presented the STLA platform.

With the technique, which can be used for both fossil and electric cars, Stellantis promises that it will be possible to build cars that go from 0 to 100 km/h in 2 seconds.

In that context, Carlos Tavares mentioned that it is important for road safety that an electric car can get off quickly.

Especially in connection with overtaking, where the often rapid acceleration of electric cars can help drivers avoid dangerous situations.

– Powerful accelerations are first and foremost about safety. It's about being able to overtake under safe conditions. About being sure that you can manage to change lanes, even when a truck has to be overtaken on a road with only two lanes.

– It's not necessarily about speed. We are only happy that electric cars can do that (drive fast, ed.), says Carlos Tavares to Top Gear .

However, not all electric car owners can handle the fact that they suddenly have a lot of horsepower and an electric motor that pulls without the rope at their disposal.

In fact, a 2020 survey showed that 50 percent of all electric car owners damage their cars within the first year. For all other car owners, the figure is between 25 and 30 percent.
