Majority of Germans want to ban speed limits on the Autobahn

It's been a hot topic for decades, but now a survey from Autoscout shows that a majority of Germans want to ban speed limits on the Autobahn.

There is free speed on several parts of the German Autobahn. But if there were an election tomorrow, it would be banned. A majority of Germans want to ban anything over 130 km/h.

This is what the newspaper Bild writes based on a study by Autoscout24.

The results are tangible. 53 percent want to ban the free speed limit, 40 percent are completely against it, while 6 percent say they are unsure. A total of 1,002 people responded to the survey.

There will actually be elections in Germany soon. They will take place at the end of February. And the parties running in the elections have already taken their positions. On the left, Die Linke, SPD and De Gronne want to ban Germans from driving faster than 130 km/h.

Meanwhile, the coalition of right-wing parties CDU/CSU as well as the FDP and AfD are firmly opposed to banning Germans from pressing the accelerator.

Something else that Germans want to get rid of, on the other hand, is a 30 km/h limit on the country's main roads. 47 percent want to get rid of it. 43 percent are in favor of keeping the low speed, while 12 percent are in doubt or have not formed an opinion.

It was immediately easier for Germans to agree that the government should promote more fuels than just electricity for electric cars. Two-thirds of Germans believe that the government should have a 'technology-neutral' approach to fuels.

Just as there must be room for electric cars, money must be spent on developing synthetic gasoline. The so-called e-fuel. In addition, the Germans will have hydrogen and biofuels to choose from.

Finally, 62 percent of Germans are against the EU's ban on the combustion engine. Something that the union envisions happening in 2035. Only 25 percent are in favor of the EU sticking to the ban. No ban without exceptions, however. Read more about it here .
