Nobody wants electric cars with a DKK 110,000 discount

For two years, a number of electric cars have been sitting idle without anyone showing interest in them. Reducing the price by 110,000 kroner doesn't help either.

Several electric cars from 2022 and 2023 cannot be sold, even with a discount of 110,000 kroner. This is shown by an analysis of the Swedish sales portal Blocket, where almost 800 brand-new electric cars have been idle for more than two years.

Despite significant price cuts, buyers seem to be reluctant. For example, an MG 5 Luxury from 2023 can be purchased for approximately 220,000 Danish kroner including free charging worth 11,000 kroner.

A BYD ATTO 3 Design has been reduced by a whopping 120,000 kroner and now costs 270,000 kroner. Even electric cars from Mercedes-Benz, which are almost two years old, are having difficulty finding buyers.

The majority of unsold electric cars are from Chinese brands, especially MG, which accounts for over 200 of the listings.

According to Klaus Silfvenius, head of car sales at the Danish Motor Industry Association, the lack of interest is due to a change in consumer behavior.

In economically uncertain times, people turn to well-known and established brands.

Newer car brands, such as Chinese ones, are therefore having a harder time attracting buyers. The rapid technological development in electric cars may also play a role.

Newer models can quickly seem outdated, which can deter potential buyers.

Although discounts and promotions are offered, there are still a large number of unsold electric cars from 2022 and 2023 on Blocket.

A quarter of these are MG models.

The lack of demand for electric cars may be due to several factors, including the current economic situation and rapid technological development.

However, it is expected that the cars will eventually be sold, possibly with further price reductions.

Klaus Silfvenius predicts that the cars will eventually find buyers when prices reach a level that matches consumer expectations.
