Citizens' proposal will hit Danish drivers with a new ban

At the beginning of January, the debate reached all the way to Christiansborg – now a citizens' proposal will ban summer tires in winter.

A new citizens' proposal wants the politicians in Christiansborg to ban summer tyres. At least in the winter.

The citizens' proposal comes after the violent snow, which neither the police nor rescue personnel could handle, when things started to go wrong out on the roads.

Several motorists were stuck on the E45 for up to 20 hours. But now a number of citizens want to force motorists to take their share of the responsibility to ensure that similar situations cannot occur again.

According to the citizens' proposal, submitted by Chris Ostenfeld Sivertsen from Favrskov, stricter requirements for the use of winter tires must be introduced.

The stricter requirements are not only intended to improve road safety. It must also reduce society's costs, it says.

However, it is not only private individuals who must follow the requirements set out in the citizens' proposal. Trucks and buses must too.

The citizens' proposal consists of three main points:

  1. All motor-driven carriages traveling on public roads in Denmark must have approved winter tires in the period 1/10-1/3 or when the average temperature is below 7 degrees over the course of a day
  2. If the above is not complied with, or if a car with summer tires or similar is caught during the period, the car must be called in for a tire inspection and can be dumped if it does not have winter tires. This also applies to trucks and buses.
  3. The tire sample must be at least 2.5 mm or more for the winter tires to be considered approved.

The citizens' proposal was published on 10 January this year. And if it is to go further into the parliament, 50,000 supports must be obtained before 8 July 2024.

But it is difficult to get an eye on the support. At the time of this article's publication, the more than 20-day-old proposal has been able to collect just 309 supports. The citizens' proposal can be read in its entirety here .
