7 out of 10 drivers experience particular problems in winter

As many as 7 out of 10 drivers responded in a new survey that they have experienced being dazzled by a very low sun in winter and autumn traffic.

Drivers often experience annoying glare from low-hanging sun, especially during the winter months. In a survey conducted by YouGov for Gjensidige, 7 out of 10 drivers stated that they have experienced being dazzled by the sun while driving in the autumn and winter.

This glare can have a significant impact on road safety, as the low-lying sun reduces visibility and makes it difficult to perceive road users and surroundings.

– When the sun is low in the sky and directly into the windshield, it can make it difficult for drivers to see other drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

In general, the low sun blurs the contrasts in traffic. Therefore, it is important to be aware of this, says claims director at Gjensidige, Lene Rasmussen, in a press release .

In addition to impairing visibility, the bright sun also creates insecurity for many drivers. More than every second driver in the study experiences discomfort and insecurity when driving in low sunlight.

– It is unsafe to suddenly be dazzled when driving, and therefore it is important to drive more carefully and keep a greater distance from the oncoming driver if the sun is very bright.

– In addition, it may be necessary to reduce speed, if possible and safe. This way you can avoid potentially dangerous situations, explains Lene Rasmussen.

It's not just the windshield that can be affected by annoying sunlight. The rear window can also be dazzled, which can affect drivers' ability to see behind. Remember that oncoming drivers may also be dazzled, so be extra aware.

Lene Rasmussen recommends wearing sunglasses in the car, even in winter:

– Sunglasses aren't just for summer. They can be invaluable in low-light situations, so always keep a pair in your car.

To minimize the risk of accidents related to low sun, it is crucial that drivers are aware of the problem and take the necessary precautions.

In addition to wearing sunglasses and driving carefully, it may be a good idea to keep your car's windows clean, both inside and out. Dirty windows can worsen glare and make it even more difficult to see.

Also remember to pay attention to the weather conditions and plan your journey so that you avoid driving during periods when the sun is lowest in the sky.
