Toyota to build self-driving cars with tech giant

American Nvidia Corp, one of the world's most valuable companies, will build and supply the chipset for Toyota's self-driving cars.

The American chip manufacturer Nvidia will supply the chipset for Toyota's upcoming self-driving cars.

The agreement entails that Nvidia will supply both hardware and software to handle the navigation of the autonomous vehicles.

Nvidia's director with the Danish-sounding name Jensen Huang announced the collaboration during his speech prior to the opening of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

– I am incredibly pleased to announce that Toyota and Nvidia are today entering into a partnership to create their next generation of self-driving cars.

This is reported by TechCrunch .

This is not the first time the two companies have collaborated. Back in 2017, Nvidia announced that Toyota had chosen its artificial intelligence technology for self-driving cars.

With the new agreement, Nvidia expands its role in Toyota's autonomous vehicle development. Nvidia's chipsets and software will be integrated into Toyota's next-generation self-driving cars, helping to improve their functionality and safety.

Toyota is neither the first nor the only car manufacturer that Nvidia has made a deal with. And it doesn't always go so well either.

For example, the chipsets that the Americans have supplied to Chinese Volvos are so technically outdated that it could cost the car brand billions of kroner to fix the car's many errors. Read more about it here .

Conversely, it's not just car brands that can see benefits in what Nvidia can do. The German subcontractor Continental also wants to use the Americans' computer chips for the development of self-driving trucks.

Overall, there is much to suggest that Nvidia can expect a lot from the automotive industry in the near future. At least financially speaking. Management believes that it can generate a profit of $5 billion from cars alone by 2026.
