Copenhagen closes 525 parking spaces – "Take the bike"

Drivers driving around the heart of Copenhagen will find it more difficult to park their cars in the future, as the municipality is closing 525 parking spaces.

Copenhagen is closing 525 parking spaces in the Medieval City.

The Municipality of Copenhagen has removed most of the street parking spaces in the area. This is part of an urban planning and traffic plan that aims to improve conditions for pedestrians and cyclists.

The municipality announced this in a press release .

The removal of the parking spaces means a significant change in parking options. Most of the remaining spaces are reserved for specific purposes, such as commercial vehicles, the disabled and embassies.

– It is a significantly changed parking situation, so if you do not have the opportunity to get there by public transport, on foot or by bicycle, I would encourage you to use one of the parking garages located around the Medieval City, says area manager Henriette Hall-Andersen.

The municipality has reserved a number of spaces in four private parking facilities for residents with a license for the Inner City. These facilities are located at Israels Plads, Vognmagergade 9, Øster Farimagsgade 5 and Nyropsgade 43.

In addition to the closure of parking spaces, low-speed zones have been introduced in most of the Medieval City. The speed limit has now been reduced to 30 km/h.

Over the coming year, the speed limit on some major roads in the area is expected to be lowered to 40 km/h.

The changes in parking conditions and speed limits are part of the municipality's plan to create a more attractive urban space with better space for pedestrians and cyclists.

The closure of parking spaces may pose challenges for drivers who will have to plan their parking well in advance or use alternative forms of transport.

In addition to closing hundreds of parking spaces, Copenhagen is expected to tighten emission requirements for cars in the capital.

From 1 January 2025, all 98 municipalities in the country have been allowed to introduce so-called zero-emission zones, where only electric cars are allowed to drive. However, the vast majority of cities currently reject the idea. Read more about it here .
