Europe's cheapest electric car just got more expensive

The Dongfeng Box is Europe's cheapest electric car. But now the Chinese brand has decided to raise the price anyway.

An electric car for 164,000 kroner? It's not possible anyway. Europe's cheapest electric car has just become more expensive. At least a little bit.

In 2025, prices for the Dongfeng Box have increased. The base model now costs from 23,499 euros and the Launch Edition, which has a slightly larger battery pack, costs 24,499 euros.

In the Netherlands, the Dongfeng importer will charge the equivalent of 164,000 kroner for a Box for the New Year. In comparison, Citroën in Denmark expects to be able to sell the electric e-C3 for 179,990 kroner. That's the price of the cheapest version called 'You' today too.

This means that all versions have become almost 1,100 euros more expensive. Or 8,200 kroner. According to Dutch Autovise, the increase is partly due to the country's own taxes, and partly to the increased punitive duties that the EU imposed on cars from China last year.

Speaking of the Netherlands, some Dutchman had a dream of building the electric car with the world's longest range. And for that matter, the best aerodynamics.

Lightyear went bankrupt in January 2023. And that was just two weeks after the brand had presented a new and cheaper car compared to the solar car Lightyear 0. That car cost 1.1 million kroner.

That is, for taxes and VAT. The sad remains – including a number of unfinished prototypes – were later sold at auction.
