Record number of Danes crossing the Øresund Bridge in 2024

On the penultimate day of the year, Linus Eriksson, director of the Øresund Bridge, can report that a record number of Danes have crossed the 16-kilometer route to Sweden.

The Øresund Bridge has experienced its highest traffic volume ever in 2024. Linus Eriksson, CEO of the Øresund Bridge, says:

– The Øresund Bridge breaks the annual record in a year that has been characterized by strong leisure traffic and significantly increased commuting. Now we enter 2025 and celebrate the 25th anniversary after a year that has never had so much traffic over the bridge.

Since 2017, both leisure and truck traffic have increased significantly. Over the course of 2024, commuter traffic has contributed most to the increase.

During the summer period June-August, traffic increased by 2.2 percent compared to the previous record from 2023.

Commuting traffic by car increased by 12.7 percent in 2024 compared to 2023. The average daily traffic for commuters is now at the same level as in 2019. 40 percent of commuting trips are made with the ØresundPENDLER+ period card, which provides unlimited travel at a fixed price.

– 2024 is a clear turning point after commuting across the strait has declined for several years. A full 13 percent more trips to and from work on the other side are made today compared to a year ago, says Linus Eriksson about the increase in a press release .

Danish leisure traffic across the Øresund Bridge reached new heights in 2024. Danish leisure traffic has exceeded Swedish traffic since 2023, which is a break with the historical trend.

Sweden's weakened krone and an increased interest in holidays in the local area are believed to be some of the reasons for the increased Danish leisure traffic. Leisure traffic on ØresundGO increased by approximately 4.6 percent in 2024 compared to 2023.

After a decline in 2023, freight traffic returned to growth in 2024. Since April, truck traffic has been at a stable level compared to 2023, and in the last quarter of the year it increased. For the whole year, truck traffic increased by 0.2 percent compared to 2023.

Since January 2023, the Øresund Bridge has registered the number of electric cars in the toll booth. In the period January-November 2024, approximately 900,000 electric cars (primarily passenger cars) crossed the bridge, an increase of 50 percent compared to the same period in 2023.

Electric cars accounted for approximately 12.5 percent of total road traffic in the period January-November.
