New scam with used electric cars has been invented in Russia

In Russia, some shady guys have figured out how to manipulate the information from the battery pack so that a worn-out battery pack can look brand new.

Just as used gasoline and diesel cars can be ridden for miles, Russia has figured out how to manipulate data from electric car battery packs.

The Russians are simply making the batteries in used electric cars look newer than they actually are. Specifically, they are making the batteries' SoH – State of Health – look better.

This is written by the Finnish Ilta Sanomat .

And if you're still not quite there, it's the capacity of the used batteries that the Russians are messing with. They've figured out how an electric car with a battery that may only have 75 percent of its original capacity left can suddenly show 100 percent again. In other words, 'peace and no danger'.

According to the Finnish media outlet, a piece of software is installed in the car before it is sold as used. This way, the car believes that the battery pack is in much better condition than it necessarily is in the real world.

Often the scam is so clever that the cheating software turns off when the car is first purchased used. The new owner is left with only the range of their electric car plummeting because the battery may actually need replacing.

A replacement that in most cases is so expensive that it costs more than the entire car is worth. Boosted has repeatedly reported on electric car owners who have to pay hundreds of thousands of kroner for a new battery.

But the even smaller battery packs in hybrid cars aren't any better. On the contrary, they waste away frighteningly quickly, claims one specialist. Read more about it here .
