The Christmas season brings a lot of traffic on Danish roads, especially at public charging stations. The number of trips in an electric car during the Christmas period has increased by 78 percent.
The number of charging stations in Denmark has increased significantly in the past year. But so has the number of electric cars. As a result, queues can arise at public charging stations, especially during holiday periods such as Christmas, when many people are on the move.
Data from Norlys, the country's second largest charging operator, shows a clear increase in the number of electric cars on the roads. This increase is especially noticeable during holiday periods, when charging stations experience a significant increase in activity.
The charging operator writes this in a press release .
During the autumn holidays, the company registered an increase of almost 25 percent in electricity consumption at their public charging stations compared to the holiday period.
However, more charging stations have been added since last Christmas. MobilityDanmark states that the number of charging points has increased by a whopping 73 percent. Norlys has contributed to this development by, among other things, opening several fast-charging parks during the year.
Most recently, Norlys has opened a fast-charging park in Ikast. Electric vehicle drivers with a Norlys home charger can now get a 10% discount on charging at Norlys' public charging stations.
The discount provides access to fast charging at a price of DKK 3.14/kWh, which is one of the lowest prices on the market.
The increase in the number of electric cars reflects a general trend. In November 2023, 187,781 electric cars were registered in Denmark. This year, the number has increased to 328,764, which corresponds to an increase of 75 percent.
The increasing number of electric cars on the roads places demands on the charging infrastructure. More charging stations are needed to meet the increasing demand for charging, especially during holiday periods with increased traffic.
About the investigation:
The increase in charging activity is based on a comparison of the period September 27 to October 6 with the autumn holidays from October 11 to October 20. Data from Norlys shows a 23.4% increase in charging activity during the autumn holidays.
