New forecast expects 1 million more electric cars in Denmark

The Danish car importers' interest body Mobilty Denmark now believes that there will be 1.6 million electric cars in Denmark in 2030.

The car importers' interest organization, Mobility Denmark, now expects to see 1.6 million electric cars on Danish roads in 2030. However, the forecast is extremely uncertain because it is conditional on the government not changing the taxes on electric cars.

Mobility Denmark's forecast shows a significant increase in the number of electric cars compared to the government's expectations from 2020, when the taxes were changed. At the time, over 1 million fewer electric cars were expected in 2030.

– The Danes have taken electric cars seriously, and with a forecast of 1.6 million electric cars in Denmark in 2030, this requires massive investments in charging infrastructure and workshops.

– Sales will only increase, and we must ensure that the green transition is a success for both motorists and society. Infrastructure and service capacity must follow the development to accommodate the increasing demand, says Mads Rorvig, managing director. director of Mobility Denmark, in a press release .

Electric cars have gained momentum in recent years due to state subsidies. And in 2024, electric cars will make up 50.2 percent of all newly registered cars in Denmark.

In order to meet the increasing demand for electric cars, significant investments in charging infrastructure are necessary.

– Investment must be made in a solid charging infrastructure and the upgrading of the electricity grid if electric cars are to become a real option for all Danes," says Mads Rorvig.

Expansion of charging stations, both in car parks and along motorways, is decisive to ensure accessibility for all electric drivers. At the same time, the electricity grid must be upgraded to be able to handle the increased load from charging electric cars.

However, the forecast also highlights uncertainties, especially in the period 2030 to 2035.

– We have seen in our neighboring countries that it has major consequences for electric car sales if the incentives are removed too soon. In Sweden and Germany, electric car sales have stagnated, but we have confidence that the tax discount on electric cars in Denmark will be maintained," says Mads Rorvig, managing director of Mobility Denmark.

If the planned tax increases on electric cars are phased in in 2026, it will have a negative impact on sales, and the forecast for the future electric car stock will look significantly different.
