Volvo stops after 56 years – top model no longer exists

Volvo's flagship – the S90 – has gone out of production. At home it has long been gone. But now it is also the case in Sweden.

For the first time in 56 years, Volvo customers can no longer buy a large sedan. Launched in 2016, the Volvo S90 is going out of production, ending an era of petrol-powered sedans that started with the Volvo 164 in the 1960s.

– The S90 that was sold in Sweden (with a short wheelbase) stopped being produced with model year 2024, confirms Magnus Holst, PR manager at Volvo Cars, to Carup .

The Chinese brand has gradually phased out its sedan models. A few months ago, production of the S60 stopped, and now it's time for the larger S90.

The S90 had its heyday in Sweden with models such as the 760 and 960, which were on the market from 1982 to 1998. Then came the front-wheel drive S80, which was replaced by the current S90 almost ten years ago.

Although the S90 has not been a bestseller in Denmark, it has had its share of buyers. This year, 10 copies of the model have been given Danish license plates. And in 2023 it became 34 cars. But now it's over.

– The old Volvo S90 can no longer be ordered, it has been a few months now," says a Swedish Volvo dealer.

An extended version of the S90 is still produced in China, but it is not imported to either Sweden, Denmark or any other country in the world.

Going forward, Volvo is betting on electrified cars. In March 2025, the ES90 is expected to be presented. The new sedan will be fully electric and share technology with the Volvo EX90 SUV.

– However, stock cars can remain at the Volvo dealer. As previously announced, the Volvo ES90 will be presented in March 2025, says Magnus Holst.
