Chinese BYD is now the world's 6th largest car brand

China's BYD takes the place as the world's 6th largest car brand and is on track to overtake Ford in sheer volume if sales continue.

At home, Chinese BYD is only just in the top 20. But internationally, the brand now occupies the world's sixth largest car manufacturer.

In the third quarter of 2024, for the first time in the brand's history, the Chinese sold more cars than Ford managed to send to motorists in the same period.

If the development continues in this way, BYD will have sold 4 million cars in the course of 2024 and will thus be able to overtake Ford within the entire year.

Nikkei Asia writes there.

Seen over the months from July to September, BYD sold 1.13 million cars worldwide. This is 38 percent more than in the same period last year.

In comparison, Ford's sales fell by just over 40,000 cars in the same period.

BYD is not the only Chinese brand that has taken a real leap forward. Also Geely, which i.a. owner of Volvo, Polestar and Lotus, can note a marked improvement. Although by BYD's standards it is somewhat more modest with 'just' 820,000 cars in the third quarter.

Conversely, Geely also has its problems. The former Swedish brands in particular give the Chinese a headache. Volvo sends the one defective car on the street.

Polestar does the same. Most recently, it has emerged that the Polestar 4 cannot accelerate as quickly as promised. Far from actually. Read more about it here .
