Audi gives up – sells Formula 1 team to Qatar

Qatar's state fund Qatar Investment Authority has bought 30 percent of Sauber Holding AG, which in 2026 will become Audi's Formula 1 team.

On Friday afternoon this week, the German car brand confirms that it has sold a large part of its Formula 1 team Sauber Holding AG to Qatar.

The partners write this in a press release .

Specifically, this is the fund Qatar Investment Authority, which belongs to the state in the Middle Eastern country.

According to Sky News' information, Audi has sold a good 30 percent of the Formula 1 team to the Middle Eastern country. It happens just a few months after Audi itself bought one hundred percent of Sauber.

How much Qatar has paid for the Formula 1 team is not known. But according to Sky Sports, it is 'an investment worth several hundred million dollars'.

On its current form, Sauber is the only team yet to score points in the 2024 season. And the chance of that happening is very small. There are only two lobs left on the dial.

The news comes the same week that it was announced that General Motors, in the form of Cadillac, has been given permission to participate in Formula 1. This will also happen from 2026.

The Americans, like Audi, must develop an engine for Formula 1. But for the first long while, Cadillac chooses the somewhat cheaper solution as a customer base. Read more about it here .
