Cadillac approved as the 11th team in Formula 1

Starting with the 2026 season, the Formula 1 field will expand to 11 teams when the General Motors-backed Cadillac team gets a place on the grid.

Cadillac has been approved as the 11th team in Formula 1 and will enter the sport from the 2026 season. General Motors, which is behind Cadillac, will thus compete side by side with other big names, including Audi.

The approval marks the end of a longer process in which Cadillac's application to Formula 1 has been the subject of both debate and uncertainty.

The agreement was finally confirmed on Monday evening Danish time, and Formula 1 can now look forward to including General Motors. According to Greg Maffei, president and CEO of Liberty Media, it is important to give a place to Formula 1 to GM.

– With Formula 1's continued growth plans in the US, we have always believed that welcoming an impressive American brand like GM/Cadillac as a future engine supplier could add further value and interest to the sport.

The Cadillac team will be based at Andretti Motorsport, which was rejected by the FIA earlier this year, but now General Motors and Cadillac have together demonstrated progress that has convinced Formula 1 owners and management of the team's eligibility.

– We credit the management of General Motors and their partners for significant progress in their readiness to enter Formula 1.

– We are pleased to move forward with the application process for the GM/Cadillac team to participate in the 2026 championship, says a representative from Formula 1.

In the first few seasons, Cadillac will use engines supplied by an external manufacturer. The plan is for General Motors to start developing its own engines for Formula 1 starting in 2028. Mark Reuss, director of General Motors, emphasized that the participation is strategically important for Cadillac in particular.

– As the pinnacle of motorsport, Formula 1 demands cross-border innovation and expertise.

– It is an honor for General Motors and Cadillac to participate in the world's leading racing series, and we are committed to performing with the passion and integrity required to elevate the sport to racing fans around the world, reads a press release .
