Burnt-out Tesla batteries cost DKK 40,000 each time

Every time a dead Tesla battery has to be disposed of, it comes with a big bill. And it's not much different for other brands.

It costs a fortune when a burnt-out electric car has to be disposed of. Just handling the battery in a burned-out Tesla costs up to DKK 40,000.

This is what Nordjysk Autoophug tells the motor magazine .

According to the media, there are currently at least ten burnt-out electric cars 'collecting dust' out at the various car scrappers. All because there is no business in chopping up the car.

It costs a fortune to dispose of the cars correctly. And it is a bill that no one in the industry has so far wanted to swallow.

– The batteries cannot be sold, because nobody wants them in that condition, and we therefore end up with the bill to get rid of them, says owner of Nordjysk Autoophug, Karsten Holst, to the media.

One thing is what it costs to 'environmentally treat' the burned-out electric cars correctly, another is the resources that fires in electric cars cost society.

Earlier this year, Boosted could tell that close to 190,000 liters of water were used when the fire brigade in California extinguished a copy of the Tesla Semi truck.

Unfortunately, stories like this are not unique. In December 2023, other firefighters had to use over 123,000 liters of water to put out the flames in another Tesla.

And in September this year, a Swedish wrecker could tell that an electric car that had otherwise burned out started to burn again after a week. Read more about it here .

Fortunately, repeated investigations show that fires in electric cars belong to the rarities. However, that does not make the fear any less. In Greece, the consequence has already been taken. Electric cars with more than 40 percent current on the batteries are not allowed on board some ferries at all.
