The lead of Chinese electric cars is a thing of the past, says Renault

The lead that the Chinese electric cars may have had, the European brands have already caught up, says Renault director Luca de Meo.

Renault director Luca de Meo believes that the lead that Chinese electric cars have is a thing of the past.

And should that not be the case, the last remnant of the Chinese's advantages will be caught up in just a few years.

On Renault's part, the pursuit of the Chinese surge involves a new platform for electric cars, which is expected to be ready in 2028.

– Thanks to our revolutionary C-segment platform, we will have caught up with the best Chinese players on both the product and cost side by 2028," says Luca de Meo.

Although Renault is currently launching retro-inspired electric cars such as the Renault 5 and R4, these do not represent the ultimate goal of the company's electric car venture, it says.

The real transformation is expected to happen with the introduction of Ampere, Renault's dedicated electric car division, and the next generation of electric cars.

The new platform is described as "being technologically advanced" and representing a significant leap forward. But then again – any car brand will say that about a new car.

According to Automotive News, Renault claims that the platform will "accommodate two generations of development in one".

This focus on innovation and cost efficiency is part of Renault's strategy to compete with the Chinese manufacturers who increasingly dominate the electric car market.

Because while several European car manufacturers are struggling to keep afloat through one round of layoffs and austerity plan after another, the Chinese are booming. A car brand has employed 200,000 new people in just 3 months. Read more about it here .
