Volvo scraps completely special petrol engine

For several years, Volvo has built petrol engines with both one and the other type of pressure charging. But now it's over with the compressor and turbo.

Volvo has decided to phase out the petrol engine with both compressor and turbo. This engine type, which combines two forms of supercharging, has been used in Volvo's T6 engine, but is now being phased out.

In the past it was common to find engines with either a turbo or supercharger, but the combination of both technologies in one engine is more rare. Volkswagen has previously used this discharge, and Volvo has had it in its T6 petrol engine.

In recent years, however, this engine has been phased out in several Volvo models. In 2021, the supercharger disappeared from the plug-in hybrid version of the XC90 when the car got an updated battery pack.

– Combining hybrid technology with turbo and compressor is a very complex solution.

And with the new hybrid system, it was possible to simplify the powertrain, Stefan Molén, program manager for hybrid powertrains at Volvo Cars, tells CarBuzz .

The phasing out of the supercharged and turbocharged engine reflects a trend in the automotive industry towards simplifying powertrains, particularly in the context of hybrid technology.

However, the Chinese brand isn't the only one literally cutting corners these days. In fact, the entire auto industry is pretty much one big cut.

Most recently, it is rumored that the Swedish battery giant Northvolt is considering bankruptcy. Among other things, because BMW has torn up a contract worth 14 billion Danish kroner in the middle.

It has also come to light that several of the factory's battery packs are of such poor quality that they must be discarded. Read more about it here .
