Mercedes returns to Le Mans after 25 years

Mercedes is returning to the Le Mans series after 25 years. The hope is to be able to beat Ferrari in the famous French 24-hour race.

Mercedes returns to the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France.

It will also be the first time in 25 years that the Germans are present on the 13.6 kilometer long Circuit de la Sarthe .

The German car brand is lining up in the new LMGT3 class with their well-known Mercedes-AMG GT3, which has previously won several major 24-hour races. Including the laps at Spa and Nürburgring.

The news marks Mercedes' first participation in the WEC series and secures them a place on the starting grid at Le Mans exactly 26 years after their last participation with the CLR LM-GTP racer.

At the time, Mercedes had only participated in the French lob three times since their victory in 1989 with the Sauber team, and the 1999 lob ended dramatically when Peter Dumbreck crashed as the LM racer went airborne for the third time that weekend.

This is what the Le Mans organization writes on its website .

Iron Lynx, which has previously represented Lamborghini in the LMGT3 class in the 2024 season, is now switching to a partnership with Mercedes.

The team also competed in the Hypercar class with Lamborghini's SC63 LMDh prototype. But the new partnership with Mercedes will make the Italian team absolutely central to Mercedes' comeback.

Iron Lynx will line up with two cars in the field, which is in line with the class rules. Mercedes thus becomes the tenth manufacturer in the LMGT3 class.

The first corners of the two Mercedes cars have been announced. Matteo Cressoni, previously part of Lamborghini's factory team, switches to Iron Lynx.

While Claudio Schiavoni, who is a partner in the team, is also confirmed as a chorus. More names are expected to be announced in the coming months.

– It is no secret that we have long wanted to bring the three-pointed star back to Le Mans, says Christoph Sagemüller, head of Mercedes-AMG Motorsport.

However, it will be without great fanfare that Mercedes returns to Le Mans. The brand has put its perhaps most iconic engine completely in the grave. Read more about it here .
